At the end of the Second World War Berlin was occupied by the Allied Forces, and as with the rest of Germany, the city was divided into four "zones" of occupation: British, French, American and Soviet. With the eventual hardening of the division of the country into the FRG (West Germany) and the GDR (East Germany), so was Berlin split, and from 1961 until 1989 it was physically divided by the Berlin Wall.
