April 2012

You are currently browsing the monthly archive for April 2012.

On Wednesday 2nd May the Circus Apartments are playing host to Dialogue Books and one of the many wonderful English-language literary events. Fittingly the reading is of a book called “The Apartment” by Berlin-resident Greg Baxter.

Here’s some more about the book from the organisers:

“One snowy morning in an old European capital, a man wakes in a hotel room. A young local woman he has befriended calls to the hotel, and the two of them head out into the snow to find the man an apartment to rent.

Greg Baxter’s astonishing first novel tells the story of these two people on this day – and the old stories that brought them to where they are. Its magically subtle and intense narrative takes them across the frozen city and into the past that the man is hoping to escape, and leaves them at the doorstep of an uncertain future.

The Apartment is a book about war, the relationship between America and the rest of the world, and the brittle foundations of Western culture; but above all it is a book about the mysteries and alchemies of friendship – truthful, moving and brilliant.

circus_baxterIf you are not a guest of the Circus but you are interested in the event, follow this link to find out how to register. We have a very limited number of tickets available to Circus guests, for which you can register at the reception. The event begins at 7.30pm.

tanz maiMonday is the 30th April, and the tradition of dancing in the start of May (at least until sunrise) is alive and well in Berlin. Down in Kreuzberg, six clubs have come together to offer a single ticket for all venues, so you can head down for a spot of “club-hopping” until the early morning…

Tickets cost €10 on the night from any of the venues – Magnet, Comet, Lido, Bi Nuu, Festsaal Kreuzberg, Soju Bar – and there is quite the line-up, guaranteeing at least somebody playing something you like. From the Facebook page of the event, here’s what is confirmed so far. It should be a great night.

Torstraße 111 is just around the corner from the Circus Hostel – by the bus stop in fact – and this Friday it is opening up as the newest art space in the neighbourhood, restored by the artists themselves.

The opening has been timed to coincide with the Gallery Weekend, and the two exhibition spaces will be the venue to showcase the work of five Berlin-based artists. Here are some details of what you can discover if you head around the corner on Friday evening:

Coming off his year-long street art project “The Cave Berlin” in which he hosted and collaborated with numerous international street artists, James Bullough shares this new work for the first time with the public mixing street art painting techniques with the accuracy of his photorealistic oil paintings to create a series of “Giant” portraits.

Michael Ebert‘s installation work deals with poetic reduction and minimization to expose the essential. He aims to show the fragility of past memories and goals and the conflicting results of perception of the individual and the other.

The large-scale works on paper by Ingo Fröhlich reveal a simplistic, methodical and repetitious mark making process. The grandeur of the rooms influence the site-specific installation of his drawings.

Rebecca Loyche’s work always plays with perception and her three-channel audio and video installation “The Art Fair” address the dynamics that transact at such a place through the use of profiling by three professionals.

Ulrike Seyboth‘s colorful and contrasting delicate paintings activate the inside of the partially preserved factory ruin space. Her work echoes the vitality and richness as well as decay and emptiness in such a place.

Jenny_CollegeofCapeTown

Jenny is our apprentice cook at our Fabisch restaurant in the Circus Hotel. Over the winter, Jenny was offered a wonderful opportunity, when she was selected as one of the best apprentice cooks in Berlin, which meant she could take part in an exchange programme with other apprentice cooks in South Africa. We were extremely proud of Jenny when she was selected, and we are looking forward to welcoming her South African equivalent to Berlin, when he or she will be spending some time in the Fabisch kitchen learning all about German cuisine and culinary techniques from our head chef Roman Bigalke and his team.

On her return from South Africa, we asked Jenny to reflect on her time there and to give us a sense of what she discovered and learned:

circus talks buttonThis Tuesday we will be once again welcoming a speaker from the ZeitZeugenBörse e.V. (Centre for the Witness to Contemporary History), an organisation that brings together eyewitnesses to different periods and moments of history to share their experiences and memories with people like us.

We are really pleased to welcome Mr Klaus Schwerk to the Circus, who will be talking about his childhood in Germany during the Third Reich and the Second World War. Some of his relatives were deported to the concentration camp in Theresienstadt, whilst Mr Schwerk was in Dresden during the catastrophic bombing raids of February 1945. Following the war, he worked for twenty years at the DED (German Development Service), including 5 years in India and 6 years in Kenya. After his talk, Mr Schwerk will be available to answer questions.

Please  remember that the talks are in English, are open to everyone, and that entry is free. Here are the details:

Bowling_Location

Actually, it might even be the coolest bowling alley in the world. Last night, as part of the St George Supporter’s Club (Berlin) meeting, a collection of Circus staff members past and present headed north to the Parkidyll bar in Pankow. Inside, it looks like a normal drinking club – although there is a small restaurant room attached where you can eat cheap and cheerful meals. But head through some doors and into the hallway of the building, and down some stairs into the basement, and you find a single bowling lane complete with drinks fridge, beer tap, and space for up to 15 people… all you could ever need for a private bowling party.

Film Society

This Friday, our friends at the Berlin Film Society have an exclusive screening of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s controversial cult film (“the scandal of the 1973 Cannes Film Festival”) ‘The Holy Mountain’, a spiritual quest for enlightenment pitting illusion against truth. The Alchemist (Jodorowsky) assembles together a group of people from all walks of life to represent the planets in the solar system. The occult adept’s intention is to put his recruits through strange mystical rites and divest them of their worldly baggage before embarking on a trip to Lotus Island. There they ascend the Holy Mountain to displace the immortal gods who secretly rule the universe.

Event details:

Friday 20th April 2012 at Katerholzig
Drinks reception: 6.30pm
Film starts: 8pm
After party (included in the ticket price): 10pm

Tickets cost €8 for Berlin Film Society members and €12 for everyone else, which includes both the film event and the then entry to Katerholzig for the after party. Check out the Facebook page and the Berlin Film Society website for more details.

After many years of wonder times at the Circus our very own dear Rosa decided it was time to branch out and open up her own business with her partner Vittorio. Since the end of 2011 in West Berlin, just close to the International bus station at number 15 Kaiserdamm, Cantina Sicialiana Da Vittorio has been supplying the local population with top quality home made Italian pastas.

rosa

The combination of Vittorio – a full blooded Italian who has been in Berlin for 20 years – and the South American hospitality of Rosa has turned out to make for a smashing combination. What’s more there is no product at the Trattoria that is not Italian (except Rosa of course….) so more authentic is not possible.

And for any of you other former members of The Circus team out there in the big wide world, drop us a line and let us know what you are up to …
