DMY 2010A bit short notice this one, and therefore maybe only useful for our readers who are actually already in Berlin, but starting today at the former Tempelhof Airport is the DMY International Design Festival.

Here’s what they say about themselves:

DMY Berlin is an international design network for contemporary product design. At the yearly DMY International Design Festival Berlin both renowned and young, experimental designers launch new products, prototypes and foresighted projects. The exhibition is accompanied by a wide program of symposia, designer-talks and workshops, able to reflect current topics of contemporary design and to reveal necessary future trends of design and its related disciplines.

The designers presenting their work come from all over the world…indeed, the list includes showcases from Buenos Aires, Seoul, the UK and Taiwan, and the Youngsters section of the festival includes work from students of Goldsmith’s College of London, the UDK Berlin, and the Esad Strasbourg. Check out the designs of the future, and have a look around the Tempelhof park as well…it’s pretty cool.

5e35ca81b0Just opened in Berlin, the Direktorenhaus is a new “art space” that aims to combine traditional art and craft methods with analogue technology and digital media. The first exhibitions – which are detailed on the website – look extremely interesting, as is the building itself. Built as part of the State Mint in 1935, the secured vault was used during the Second World War to protect artworks from the city’s state museums from bomb damage. So it already has (kind of) artistic history, even before its current incarnation.

The Direktorenhaus can be found at Am Krögel in Berlin-Mitte, overlooking the river Spree, and is open from Monday to Saturday, 11am until 7pm.

StefanieScheier2We have long been fans of the work of Stefanie Scheier, who crafts her wonderful ceramic pieces at her studio-shop on Husemannstraße, near Kollwitzplatz in Prenzlauer Berg. She describes the inspiration for her pieces as follows:

“What is important for my work is the choice and combination of material; simple shapes and the design of the surfaces…working with various coloured clay, using a special paint.”

Both the look and the feel of Stefanie’s work is timeless, reflecting both her talent and a commitment to her craft where the value of an object comes not only through the aesthetic qualities of the piece, but also in the time and effort devoted to its creation. We have examples of her work as part of our “Berlin Design Showcase”, which you can find in both the hostel and the hotel.

Better yet, you can visit Stefanie at her studio-shop, which is open on Thursdays and Fridays between 1pm and 7pm, and again on Saturdays between 11am and 4pm. The address is Husemannstraße 22 (google map) and you can also get more information on Stefanie’s website.

cartoon_donaldCan you guess who it is? For his project “Cartoon Particles” Rainbowmonkey, aka Marcus Hofko was searching for the basic elements of classic cartoon characters. If you follow this link to the website, you can click on the different images of the elements to find out who is who.

The Rainbowmonkey is described by its creator as a personal playground for art, design and music, and there are plenty of other interesting things on the website. So take a look.

Sandra's Friend

One of 101 Heroes from Nina Staehli (and now mine), this little guy was born and grew up in Switzerland and was smuggled over the border to Germany in the bottom of a rucksack. With two of his friends he has made a new home for himself in Berlin-Wedding, where we now have the beginnings of a heroic football team.

About the Artist: Nina Stähli divides her time between Zug (Switzerland) and Berlin and has been involved in too many projects, awards, collaborations, exhibitions and publications than we have space for here. Her work has been exhibited around the world, including France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Japan and Austria.

During her career she has won awards to studio and project stays in Berlin, Genoa and Tokyo and her most recent solo exhibition was called “Touching Heroes and Catalysis” at the Gallery Art/Seefeld in Zurich. Nina created “The Sparrows” which live in the winter garden of the Restaurant Fabisch at the Circus Hotel. You can see example of her work and more information on her website.
