Last week the Berliner Volksbank published their business report for 2012, which also featured a focus on tourism in Berlin and Brandenburg. Amongst the articles included in the publication was a profile of The Circus, exploring the history of the company and key elements of The Circus philosophy. It also features the above photograph of the five owners of the company (l/r: Tilman Hierath, Christian Göppert, Andrew “Jim” Hadfield, Andreas Digel and Andreas Becker), as well as some our guests, Jule from our reservations office, and Roman, head chef in our restaurant Fabisch.

You can find the report here (it is in German) with the Circus story starting on page 5. Here is Andreas’s reaction:

“When the report from the Berliner Volksbank, which contains their annual accounts and has a print run of forty thousand, landed on our desks I couldn’t help but think back to the early days of The Circus. I remember walking the streets of Berlin with my mates, dressed in jeans and t-shirts, and marching into any bank we saw to try and persuade them to lend us the twenty thousand euros we needed to get The Circus project off the ground. Each time we walked in, and each time we failed… thirteen times.

So to find ourselves in the annual report of one of Berlin’s biggest banks is one of those moments where you realize you have come a long way, and as always, we have to offer up a big thank you to all those involved in the journey.” – Andreas Becker

So you’ve come to Berlin and want to explore the city. The weather is fine, so you don’t want to join the crowds on the U-Bahn or sit in a stuffy bus, but at the same time you have realized that the walk from the East Side Gallery to the Bauhaus Archive might be a little too much for your feet to take. Never fear, we have you covered. We already offered the chance to rent bicycles, segways and Elmotos here at the Circus, and now we have a new member of our two-wheeled family – the Pedelec, thanks to the good folks at Lautlos durch Deutschland.

Unlike the Elmotos they have pedals, and unlike our bikes they have a motor… so if you manage to actually find a hill here in Berlin (next mountain to the east, somewhere in Russia) then you can let the Pedelec take the strain. When you are feeling fit and good, like a 2012 Bradley Wiggins, then the Pedelec works just like a normal bike as you cruise through the streets.

If you want to rent two wheels for your tour of the city, the prices are as follows (per day): Bike €12, Segway €15, Pedelec €18, and Elmoto €20… and if you need MORE WHEELS FOR YOUR MONEY… we also have rollerblades, for the low, low price of a fiver a day. Get moving through the city!

We are extremely proud of our apartments on Choriner Straße, and in the first year that they have been opened we have really enjoyed welcoming guests to the newest member of the Circus family, and hearing how much people have enjoyed the space and the facilities that they have to offer. But what if you want to have a look around but you haven’t arrived yet and are a long way away? Thanks to the good folks at Spree 3D you can have a poke around one of our 6 person apartments (which goes by the name of Heinrich) on the Apartments homepage. Click on the picture above to take a look, or follow this link, and thanks again to Daniel and everyone at Spree 3D for the chance to offer this virtual tour.

Finally the winter appears to have beaten a chilly retreat, and as we approach the 1st May it seems that spring is actually and finally upon us. At all three houses we have spots for you to sit and enjoy the ever warmer weather, from the relaxed pavement setting on the Choriner Straße outside the Apartments, with plenty of birdsong for company, or the courtyard of the Hotel at Fabisch where you can escape for a lazy afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of the city…

Or perhaps that is what you are looking for, so pull up a chair on the terrace of the Hostel or outside the Café and watch the Rosenthaler Platz – immortalized in Döblin’s Berlin Alexanderplatz – go about its business. Grab and beer or a coffee and enjoy the tram-spotting and the people-watching, as they move between Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg, from Hackescher Markt to Kastanienallee and back again…

We were extremely pleased and excited to find out that The Kitchen at The Circus Apartments – the ground floor café and lounge designed by our good friend Rani al Rajji – has been featured in the book “Let’s Go Out! Interiors and Architecture for Restaurants and Bars” published by Gestalten. Here’s what they say about their book:

“Let’s Go Out! presents engaging architecture and interior design for restaurants, bars, and clubs.

The pleasure we get from going out to eat, drink, and spend time together no longer just depends on the quality of food and beverages offered and the company we keep. Today, our level of enjoyment is also determined by how a location enables us to experience and share what we undertake. Consequently, more and more creatives are applying their talents to designing memorable atmospheres for the places we choose to meet.

Against this background, Let’s Go Out! is a stunning contemporary survey of extraordinary possibilities for going out from around the world. In addition to new interpretations of restaurants, bars, and clubs, the book documents striking temporary events, concept spaces, and installations.”

We are extremely proud to have been included in such a wonderful collection of spaces – and if you get a chance to flick through the 280-odd pages packed with beautiful pictures and lots and lots of inspiration.

Easter banner

We hope that all of you that have come to Berlin for Easter Weekend are going to have a great time in Berlin and here at the Circus, and we just wanted to let you know about a few special things we have planned. All weekend in our restaurant Fabisch at the Circus Hotel we have a special Easter menu, so make sure you check out what head chef Roman Bigalke has planned. And on Sunday morning, in the Circus Hostel, the Circus Hotel and the Circus Apartments, we have an Easter Egg hunt planned, with special prizes to be won. So come down for breakfast and join the fun.

New telly

We know that the sun is shining, and even if it wasn’t there is so much to see and do in Berlin, but sometimes at the end of a day tramping the streets or in the morning after a night on the dancefloor, you just want to put your feet up and whack on the telly. Which is why we have recently upgraded our television package at the Circus Hotel to include two new English language channels – Fox (entertainment) and Sky Atlantic (with all your favourite HBO shows), as well as Sky Sports – which now means you can catch the Champions League and Europa League football, the English Premier League, as well as the Bundesliga, golf, Formula One and other sporting events in your hotel room. Sweet. And don’t forget, you can order from the Fabisch menu to be delivered to your room for no extra charge.

Meanwhile, over in the Circus Apartments, it is now possible to rent a Sky box for your apartment during your stay, which is packed full of international channels for your entertainment and information. So your apartments can feel even more like a home away from home.

Jurgen HW

Last week our hostel manager Jurgen was in Dublin for the Hostelworld Conference, and we were extremely pleased to welcome him home with an award under his arm. The Circus Hostel came 4th in the category of Worldwide Large Hostel at the Hoscars – the annual awards given out by Hostelworld, and which are based on the reviews and ratings of hostel guests made during the previous twelve months. We have long been pleased and proud of our rating on Hostelworld, and to have placed so high in the awards for the second year running is the icing on the cake.

Across the street at the Circus Hotel, for the fourth year in a row since it opened, we have once again won in the Tripadvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards, for 2013 in the category of Best Service in Germany. Once again, as the Tripadvisor awards are based on reviews written by travellers, we are extremely happy and proud to once again have been recognized in this way. It comes after a year in which all three Circus houses achieved excellent reviews on Tripadvisor, and the current situation reflects this, as The Circus Hotel is ranked #1 for all hotels in Berlin, whilst the Circus Apartments is ranked #1 for all specialty lodgings, with the Circus Hostel ranked #3 in the same category.

We would like to take this chance to thank everyone who has stayed with us and has taken the time to write a review or leave a rating on websites such as Hostelworld or Tripadvisor, or indeed to make a comment on blogs, twitter and facebook, or anywhere else. We take the opinions of our guests extremely seriously, and we make sure we try and find out what people are saying about us – and not just the nice stuff – in order that we can keep making changes and improving. We would also like to take the chance to thank the Circus team – it is no coincidence that the award for the hotel is for the levels of service in the house, nor the fact that “Staff” gets a consistently high rating on Hostelworld.

Thanks everyone!
