2011reviewpartoneIn amongst all the excitement of the opening of the Apartments last week, we missed the second birthday of this lovely blog, and so we thought we would use the chance to not only say “Happy Birthday” to ourselves, but have a look back at a year in the Circus through our blog posts. Now quite a lot of things have happened to us over the past twelve months, so we have decided to split this into two and begin with the first six months of the year.

In January we launched our cooperation with the ZeitzeugenBörse for our series of eyewitness history talks, which are still continuing each month in Fabisch, and we have a very special treat and surprise on this topic coming up in January…so keep your eyes open! We also recieved the happy news that The Circus Hotel had once again been selected for the Tripadvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards, voted for by people who have stayed with us at the hotel and a wonderful achievement for the second year in a row. Later in month Judith and Lisanne took some guests on a special Long Night of the Museums Tour, whilst Jared started on his mission to eat around Berlin.

February might be the shortest month but there was lots going on, especially as the Berlinale was in town. We also prepared a very special welcome for a very special friend of ours.  March was completely packed, with a renovation of the Circus Cafe just in time for all the different events of our Slow Travel Day, including tours, film screenings, a pop-up bookshop and much more, whilst our small Kunstbox at the hostel became host for the Pictosplasma festival. Over at the hotel Marie Jacobi brought Rapunzel to the tower, where she still sits…

Into spring and we welcomed the Berg Gallery to our Kunstbox, celebrated Hertha’s return to the Bundesliga, and continued our obession with you know who. As the weather continued to get warmer the fun and games carried on, with a visit of Gino the Clown to the hostel, we sadly waved goodbye to Konny as he left the Circus (we still miss you), and made the first announcement of the new Circus Apartments.

As the summer arrived we headed up onto the roof of the Circus Hotel for yoga sessions, and worked with our neighbours on the Rosentage neighbourhood and cultural festival. We reached the halfway point of the year with Lisa hosting “Europe’s Most Awesome Barbecue” in Mauerpark.

Phew…and we are only halfway there. Part Two of the 2011 review will be on the blog in the next couple of days…

Christmas Bazaar BlogOn Tuesday 20th December we will be hosting our very own Christmas Bazaar at The Circus Cafe. Beginning at 5pm we will be selling handicrafts designed and created by members of the Circus team, including cosmetic/travel bags with different motifs (including Berlin and the Circus), as well as loop scarves, notebooks and homemade pralines.

There will also be soup, cake and glühwein, all of which will be “sold” on a donation basis, to raise money for MULTITUDE, the refugee rights and support organisation here in Berlin that the Circus has been supporting recently, such as through the fleamarket donation of our piles and piles of lost and found. Multitude’s idea is to visit and plan activities with the refugees, to help take their minds away from what can be an incredibly negative process that they have to deal with, and build a multicultural exchange between the refugees and the wider German society. The activities include German lessons, cooking and watching movies together, playing with the children, organising picnics in the park or games of basketball.

From 7pm Lady Gaby will be hosting a spoken word event, featuring Christmas Stories from around the world. The four performers will use stories, poetry and song to tell their very own yuletide tales. So come and join us next Tuesday for a couple of festive hours, buy some homemade presents for loved ones, help raise money for a very important organisation, and listen to expat tales of Christmas past to help get you in the holiday spirit. It’s going to be fun…

Last Friday we were visited by Rainer Schmitt, musician, filmmaker and friend of the Circus, who came by the hostel to get the footage he needs for the film he is making about us. He was ably assisted by Dominik Fraßmann, and as you can see from the pictures, he took some time to make sure Circus team-members Julia, Alex, Anne and Lisa all showed their best side.

Now all we can do is wait for the final cut… we’re looking forward to it!

Anne answers another probing question…

the grubLast Thursday was Thanksgiving for our cousins across the great wide pond, so The Circus Café put on a special three-course turkey dinner. Now, coming from Stockport there is not much that I know about this festival, so I had to do some research to make it as much like Mum’s (sorry, Mom’s) for our guests as possible. Some things we managed, but some others we failed…

Thanksgiving Like What Your Mum (Mom) Would Do It…

I. Your Mum(Mom) needs to be there. FAILED. But Steffi our Café Manager was on hand to serve up the dinner and she’s a Mum (Mom) <Mutter> so that was okay.

II. Eat Turkey. SUCCESS.

III. Eat Too Much Turkey. SUCCESS

IV. Drink Too Much Booze. SUCCESS (After the meal it was down to the bar for a free keg of beer to wash down all that food).

V. Have Alcohol-Fueled Arguments With Loved Ones/Family* (*delete where applicable): FAILED. Even in this era of modern communications, skype and mobile phones, because of the time difference at least one of the parties was sober.

VI. Have Left-Overs For Sandwiches The Next Morning: SUCCESS, and the reservations office loved them very much.

So as you can see, it was not a bad effort considering this was Thanksgiving planned by people brought up in Manchester (England) rather than Manchester (New Hampshire), and a great time was had by all.

Except the Turkey. Roll on Christmas.

open micThis Sunday we are extremely happy to both launch and welcome back an old favourite to Goldman’s Bar. Yes, that’s right, this Sunday is the return of OPEN MIC – your chance to experience that shiver of fame and recognitions, and perhaps even applause, as you take to the Goldman’s Bar stage armed only with your talent.

The All New Goldman’s Bar Open Mic Sunday Spectacular is hosted by Aussie expat Rob Longstaff, who is extremely entertaining, and he promises a fun evening including prizes to be won for those brave enough to step up to the mic and show us what they’ve got. So forget Popstar-X-Factors-Got-Talent and all the rest, come down to Goldman’s Bar on Sunday night at 9.30pm for some great music, cold drinks and top prizes.

Rock on.

St G Founding MembersHistory was made last week in Goldman’s Bar as it held the first meeting as the official HQ of the Berlin St. George Supporters Club. The foundation of this club is important, as it fills an aching gap in the Berlin social calendar – namely; where else can like-minded boys and girls get together to talk about Australia and the World’s greatest Rugby League Team.

All four founder members were of course present and correct – see photo above – our great leader Andy (President), Jim (Vice President), Lisa (Assistant to the Vice President) and Felix (Berlin Flames Co-ordinator). There were try outs for keenly sort-after places in the Berlin Flames Cheerleader team and lots of new members attracted.

Most importantly of course there was free beer – and I seem to remember somewhere towards the end Jägermeister – but by that point things were getting a little foggy. Let us just say that a good time was had by all and we are looking forward to the start of the new season and the next meeting on the club sometime in the New Year. If you are interested in becoming a member then just drop us a line… Go the Dragons!!!

festival of lights funky zigzaggy thingRight at this moment we are in the middle of the Festival of Lights, which is one of the world’s largest illumination festivals and offers a view of some of the most famous sights of Berlin in a way that you have never seen them before. This is the 7th edition of the festival, and it is well worth checking out. There are over 40 locations throughout the city, and three clusters – around the Zoo Station, Unter den Linden, and Alexanderplatz – are good starting points.

There is more information on the website, including a map of all the different illumination locations for you to explore.

Because this event is so spectacular, and because you might want to dust off the old camera and grab some pictures of the event, The Circus has teamed up with Brewer’s Best of Berlin Tours to offer a very special Night Photography tour, which will include the best locations of the Festival of Lights as well as top hints and tips to help you bag the best shot on film or, erm, digital memory card-type thingy.

The tours are running on THURSDAY, SATURDAY and SUNDAY, and the meeting point is The Circus Café at the Circus Hostel. The tours cost €5, which you pay direct to the guide, but it we kindly ask that people register their interest with us at the reception.

Enjoy the festival, meet some nice folks, and grab some great shots to impress your friends and family with. Sounds good eh?

wwcup 2011

So all good things must come to an end. The Women’s World Cup in Germany has been a great tournament, with lots of fans flocking to the stadiums but more importantly there has been cracking games of football. The Quarter Finals alone were full of drama, with England crashing with deadening predictability out of the tournament on penalties to France, Sweden fighting off the spirited resistance of Australia, and then the shock defeat of the host nation and favourite against the tiki-taka of Japan.

And then came the most dramatic of them all, as Brazil led the United States by 2-1 going into injury time, after 120 minutes of goals, faked injuries, a red card, a penalty saved and then re-taken and a barnstorming goal from Marta. The Americans looked to be leaving the tournament at the Quarter Final stage and then, in the second minute of injury time of extra time, Rapinoe floated in a cross for Wambach who crashed it into the net. Dresden and the American team went nuts, and it was clear that in the penalty kicks there could only be one winner.

The Semi Finals were a little less dramatic, but the USA came through a tough game with France to reach the final, and Japan put on arguably the best performance of any team in the tournament so far to knock out Sweden and reach the final of a major tournament for the first time. So Sweden and France have to lick their wounds and lift themselves up for the third place match on Saturday, whilst the USA and Japan duke it out for the big prize on Sunday.

And of course, you can watch both games at The Circus:

Women’s World Cup Final
