On Tuesday 21st May 2013 we are extremely pleased to be welcoming to The Circus another eyewitness speaker from the Zeitzeugenbörse (Centre for Witness to Contemporary History). This is part of our monthly series events that we have been running for the past two years, in which we invite speakers to come and join us for a while and tell us their own personal stories about different moments in Berlin and German history.

This month we are delighted to welcome Dr Golkowsky who will be coming to talk to us about the Second World War and its aftermath. Dr Golkowsky was born in 1934 in Silesia, and will share stories of his experience during the war, the flight to the west, and observations on life for himself, friends and family, on both sides of the iron curtain.

We are really looking forward to another fascinating evening of personal history in Fabisch, and we hope you will join us. The talk will be in English, is open to all, and is free… although we will be collecting contributions towards our own donation to the ZZB to help them continue in their important work.

Cafe Conversations

Tomorrow evening sees the start of a new series of events at The Circus Hostel, that is tied into our current monthly programme of Circus Talks that takes place across the road at The Circus Hotel. In a couple of weeks we will be welcoming the next of our “Eyewitnesses” to Fabisch (keep an eye out here on the blog for details) but our new event brings one of Brewer’s Berlin Tours expert guides to the café to talk about a particular period in the city’s history. Tomorrow the topic of the talk is The Rise of the Third Reich, and it promises to be an informative and interesting evening.

As always at The Circus the event is free, and guests can also join us an hour earlier for free dinner as part of our daily “Dinner Time”.

Mr Eglin will talk to us about working for the US Airforce as a “local national”, life in the city during the division, and the events of 1989 and the reunification of Berlin and Germany, during which he met his wife.

circus-talks-buttonOn Tuesday 19th February 2013 we are extremely pleased to be welcoming to The Circus another eyewitness speaker from the Zeitzeugenbörse (Centre for Witness to Contemporary History). This is part of our monthly series events that we have been running for the past two years, in which we invite speakers to come and join us for a while and tell us their own personal stories about different moments in Berlin and German history.

This month we are delighted to welcome Hans-Dieter Robel who will be coming to talk to us about his life in Berlin during the period when the city was divided in two by the infamous Berlin Wall. Born in Hanover in 1948, Herr Robel came to Berlin 1969 during one of the coldest periods of the Cold War. Working as a civil engineer, he was involved in projects not only in West Berlin but also in East Germany, and so experienced life on either side of the divide. The division of Germany also had a personal impact on Herr Robel and his family, as his grandparents were in the East and as a consequence they never met their grandson.

circus-talks-button-300x300Once again we are really pleased to be welcoming another eyewitness speaker to the Circus, as part of our ongoing series of history talks in cooperation with the ZZB – The Centre for Witness to Contemporary History. The talk is taking place at The Circus Hotel on Tuesday 18th September, and as always it is completely free, takes place in English, and everyone is welcome.

Our speaker this month is Dr Harald Jancke. At the age of six years old, Dr Jancke and his family were taken from Germany at the end of the Second World War to the Soviet Union to a small town 120km north of Moscow. His father – a physicist – was one of thousands of specialists spirited away by the Soviet regime to “help” develop the weaponry that would be central to the Cold War struggle. Dr Jancke’s father was one of over 500, who were taken to the Soviet Union to help develop different aircraft for the Soviet air force. In 1952 the family returned to Germany, to live in East Berlin. Dr Jancke will talk about the personal, social and political aspects of his childhood years in the Soviet Union, and it promises to be a truly fascinating talk.

Our speaker this month is Helga Wille who has lived in Berlin from 1963 until present day. Inspired by the events of the Cold war, Helga studied political science in West Berlin. During this time Helga formed a very close relationship with the Hildebrandt family in the east and the Versöhnungskirche in Bernauer Strasse east Berlin. As a result of this relationship she made many border crossings into East Berlin. Helga will share her experiences living in a divided city, sharing stories of border crossings and the personal circumstances of friends that she discovered on the other side.
