to rococo rotEveryone at The Circus and Slow Travel Berlin are extremely excited by the most recent addition to the line-up for Sunday’s Slow Travel Day; A guest DJ spot from Robert Lippok, founder member of Berlin-based electronic legends To Rococo Rot! Robert will be playing a mix of electronic and indie music, including some rare To Rococo Rot tracks, and material from his new release on Raster Noton.

Robert will be spinning down in Goldman’s Bar from 9.30pm, so if you want hear some of the sounds of the neighbourhood – Robert grew up, and still lives, just up the street from the Circus on the Zionskirchplatz – then make sure you come down to the bar on Sunday evening.

If you would like to read more about Robert and To Rococo Rot, then there is a really interesting article on Slow Travel Berlin:

To Rococo Rot have been pushing their unique brand of loping electronica for 15 years. As they prepare to release their new album – the first for six years – STB chat to Berlin-based brothers Robert and Ronald Lippok to talk about growing up in Zionskirchplatz, dodging the Stasi and the early 90s ‘golden years’…

“This was where the main bohemian scene used to be,” states Ronald Lippok, gesturing out of a large café window in the general direction of Kastanienallee. “When we were younger, playing in punk-rock bands, all the rehearsal spaces were around Schoenhauser Allee and here in Zionskirchplatz. This was the centre of the art scene in the 80s. Places like the Wiener café and the Metzer Eck (on Metzerstrasse) were where you’d find punks and poets hanging out together…”

happy_birthday

On the 15th December 2009 we launched the Circus Blog, and the last twelve months have certainly been exciting at the Circus. In the finest traditions of those end of year “best of” lists that are currently filling magazines and television programmes, here are some of our favourite moments at the Circus over the past year and on the Circus blog.

In January we closed down the Circus Hostel for the best part of three months as we made a complete renovation of the building in time for the re-opening at Easter. Alongside the new design features, infrastructure improvements, and the funky new facade, we also put together some new services for  Circus guests to help them explore Berlin, such as Jimbo’s Cheap Man’s Bus Tour, the Cwiki guide to Berlin complied by the Circus team, and the Urban Wanderer DIY Walking Tours.

It was also a busy year over at the Circus Hotel. We built a new library for Fabisch, launched the Circus Hotel Magazine, hosted a press conference for the Sparkasse Tourism Barometer, and installed some funky works of light art in the hallways, and in the courtyard. Talking of art, the Temporäre Kunstbox hosted its first exhibitions and happenings, whilst Sandra kept the blog supplied with “Stuff we like” around Berlin and beyond.

What else? Andreas left us for three months to travel through Southern Africa, sending back his impressions and reports from the 2010 World Cup before travelling on from South Africa to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia. Jared kept us refreshed with his guide to best places to sip a cocktail in Berlin and beers on the road, whilst Jim headed to the hidden corners of Berlin, giving us all inspiration for exploration off the beaten track.

Along the way we went to a football game in Pankow, the boot record was broken in Goldman’s Bar, we held a fundraiser for children’s homes in Nepal, Konny got married, Tommy was born, we learned to juggle in the finest Circus traditions, an old friend won an important prize, and the Circus football team did us proud.

What a year, with a lot of fun and hard work along the way. Thanks to everyone in the Circus team for a fantastic 2010, and to everyone who has been following the Circus blog either here or on our facebook page.

Here’s to another great twelve months!

Paul

button_boot_02On the video below you can see the new boot record at Goldman’s Bar, which is now held by Casey McNeil from Texas, who downed the boot in one minute and fourteen seconds. That’s 74 seconds for two litres of German beer.

Blimey.

If that wasn’t enough, Casey had a go at breaking his own record a couple of days later and missed out by only a couple of seconds. The current King of the Boot is duly crowned. Hats off Casey. Good work.

oktoberfest

Who likes beer? The taste of the first pint of the evening, cold and lovely, when work is over for another day…(checks watch)…I can’t wait…refreshing, delicious…Mmmmm…

Sorry, where was I? Oh yes, beer. As you probably know, around this time every year those crazy Bavarians and their friends gather together in big tents in Munich to drink overlarge beers, munch on roast chicken, and get groovy to the sounds of the Oompah band. The Oktoberfest is one of the world’s favourite festivals, and as Bavarian is home to some of Germany’s (and come on, let’s face it, that means the world’s) best breweries, it seems fitting that it is this celebration of Homer Simpson’s favourite tipple that the city has become famous.

Anyway, we’re not jealous up here in Berlin. Yes they’ve got the mountains, the cute leather pants and the Oktoberfest, but we’ve got a lot of good stuff too…our TV tower is better for a start…but this weekend the philosophy at the Circus is very much: If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

Beginning this Saturday 18th September we will begin our very own Oktoberfest celebrations down in Goldman’s Bar. We have the special Oktoberfest beer on tap, a daily delivery of fresh pretzels to line the stomach, and as many over-sized beer glasses as any self-respected South German barmaid could carry. We’ll be tapping the first keg tomorrow evening, some good on down and join the fun. Prost!

jackoWhat follows is Andrew’s selection of things to look forward to in Berlin and at the Circus this week. He is only bitter about the football because he’s Australian…

The Fête de la Musique (aka “World Music Day”) is an open-air festival celebrating anything and everything that can help make a beat. With all concerts free and 89 stages of music to choose from, it’s difficult to pinpoint any one event, but a chance to see Berlin’s Modeselektor top off a line-up of other electro/glitch artists including Sisiusmo and Jesse Rose should not go unnoticed.

Tipping_WallchartFor every major football championship since the Circus first opened its doors back in 1997, the staff and friends of the company have taken part in a Tipping Competition. The rules have been tweeked over the years, but the basic principle remains…we all have to tip the results of every since game at the World Cup, as well as predicting who will win each group, which four teams will reach the Semi-Finals, and which nation (Argentina) will emerge victorious in the final on the 11th July.

Now, modesty prevents me from telling all the lovely readers of the Circus Blog exactly how well I myself am doing…let’s just say that a good number of teams and players at this tournament have let me down, and yes, I am taking it personally (I’m looking at you Slovakia).

With only two more games to go before every nation has played at least once, the current leader of the Circus Tipping Competition is Jim with 14 points, followed closely by Andreas and Sophie who both are on 13. Here’s the evidence:

Tipping_BexyJimboTipping_Sophie

So at least through Jim we have one Englishman performing creditably during the 2010 World Cup, even if his own patriotism might possibly hamstring his attempts to take the coverted victors crown by the end of the tournament.

If this all seems a little self-indulgent, then please forgive us, but we do also have a tipping competition that is available to everyone who comes down to the Circus to watch the games. For €1 people predict the score down in the bar, and the winner or winners share the pot at the final whistle. If nobody picks correctly then we have a roll-over, and by the start of last nights game the pot had risen to €50 and one english pound.

Fittingly, the first big winner of the daily tipping competition was a South African. Kathline is staying with us all week, having been involved in the preparations for the tournament back home before her travels began. Last night she tipped the result of Brazil vs North Korea with unearring accuracy, and therefore ended the evening taking home the entire pot:

Tipping_Kathline

Kathline seemed less impressed with the English pound. Can our national pride take this continual battering? I’m not sure I even dare to watch on Friday…

Robert-Green-006Hmmm…the first few days of the World Cup are behind us, and after a relatively low-key start the talking points revolve around the continuing tradition of goalkeeping howlers, regardless who is wearing the famous three-lions jersey between the sticks, and a wonderful performance from a young German team that produced the most exciting football of the tournament so far.

In Berlin the flags are flying…for the national team of course, but you can spot the colours of most of the competing teams somewhere in the city. On the weekend, in Hohenschönhausen, there were even a couple of English flags flying from a couple of balconies. There is no question what the sound of the World Cup is so far…and walking the Berlin streets during a match, with televisions set up outside cafes, bars, bakeries and newsagents, you get the feeling that the city is being attacked by a swarm of angry bees or hungry mosquitoes.

Today my German colleagues seem pretty happy, and in the glow of such a fine victory they are gracious enough not to tease us Englishmen too much. But as ever with the World Cup, there is hardly a pause for breath. Over the next few days these are the games we are looking forward to, and of course, are showing live on the big screen at either the Cafe or Goldman’s Bar in the Circus Hostel…
