carnival

If you want to join in the raucous and rowdy celebration of Berlin’s multicultural spirit then head south from Rosenthaler Platz to Kreuzberg on Sunday to join in with parade of the Carnival of Cultures, a fabulous collection of carnival groups from around the world made up of masqueraders, musicians, dancers, DJs and artists.

Around the Parade, from Friday to Monday there is a great programme of events going on around the neighbourhood… more about which you can find on the Carnival website. But never fear, if you head down on the U8 to Kreuzberg over the weekend you will have a great time of tasty food, super tunes, and over a million people throughout the four days who have realized as well that there is only one place in the city to be.

We are extremely proud of our apartments on Choriner Straße, and in the first year that they have been opened we have really enjoyed welcoming guests to the newest member of the Circus family, and hearing how much people have enjoyed the space and the facilities that they have to offer. But what if you want to have a look around but you haven’t arrived yet and are a long way away? Thanks to the good folks at Spree 3D you can have a poke around one of our 6 person apartments (which goes by the name of Heinrich) on the Apartments homepage. Click on the picture above to take a look, or follow this link, and thanks again to Daniel and everyone at Spree 3D for the chance to offer this virtual tour.

UP IN TIME FOR BREAKFAST…

One of my favourite spots for breakfast – and not far from The Circus – is the Café Fleury in Weinbergsweg. Sometimes hard to get a table, but they also have an outside area with blankets and morning sun. They have great Cappuccino, several breakfast options but also cakes, daily changing soups and sandwiches. If you´re not the big-breakfast-type, just take the “petit français” (“little French”) – a coffee and a croissant.

GOOD MORNING BERLIN…

Once done with breakfast, I´d walk up Kastanienallee, a great street to do some not too expensive shopping if you don´t like big fashion chains. There are several shops of Berlin labels such as Mr. & Mrs. Peppers (Kastanienallee 91/92) who have great Berlin-made skirts and dresses, with a hint of 70ies. In winter time, you should stop for a waffle at Kauf dich glücklich, a café/shop where you can basically buy everything they have inside. The Elvis waffle is my favourite J

It was a nice bit of trivia whilst it lasted… for the past twelve months Berlin was the only major capital in Europe without a football team in its national top division, but with a 1-0 victory over Sandhausen this weekend Hertha BSC have returned to the Bundesliga. 1 and they have the chance to wrap up the 2nd Division Championship in the next couple of weeks as well. But although football fans throughout Germany mock the capital for its footballing prowess (or lack of), in other sports the story is much healthier.

Getting equal billing to the Hertha boys this Monday morning was the Ice Hockey players from Berlin’s Eisbären (Polar Bears), who won the fourth play-off game over the weekend to clinch their third German Championship in a row and their fifth in six years. Meanwhile, the basketball team ALBA, who share the 02 World with the Eisbären, have clinched a play-off spot and despite an indifferent season will go into the knock-out series to determine the champions knowing that they always have a chance… in March they already picked up their first silverware of the year by winning the German Cup.

Meanwhile the women’s team from the Berliner HC are currently top of the field hockey Bundesliga, a championship the men’s team won last year, and the men’s volleyball team of the Berlin Recycling Volleys came 1st in Bundesliga during the regular season and are currently battling for the German title in the play-offs. So football might not be the Hauptstadt’s forte, but on the ice, the court and the Astroturf, Berlin’s sporting men and women can compete with the best.

Congratulations to the various Berlin teams on their successes this year, and remember, once again next season you can get your tickets for Hertha BSC games at the Olympic Stadium here at The Circus, and now with added Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04 and VfB Stuttgart…

The next in our series of Perfect Days, written by members of the Circus team, brings us to Andreas Becker – one of the managing partners of the company – and thankfully the days are getting warmer so that he can get back on his bike…

UP IN TIME FOR BREAKFAST…

My perfect day would be a mild April morning with the temperature in the late teens, and I’d go down to the garage, kick start the old Moto Guzzi and go for a ride through the city along the Street of the 17th June towards the Cafe am Neuen See to have my breakfast – either with a loveable person or, if not possible, a good a magazine. It is a green oasis right in the heart of the city, and the lake and the rowing boats are idyllic.

GOOD MORNING BERLIN…

After breakfast I would jump back on the Guzzi and – if it is a weekday – I would probably do a bit of window shopping, including Murkurdis, where I always hang out for a coffee on the terrace outside. Or perhaps I would head for KaDeWe and a stop-off at the classy Imbiss on the the 6th floor, before heading towards the motorbike shops along Bundesallee. A day away from the Circus means a day of floating through the city on the back of my bike… total pleasure.

Jogging

In 2013 the Berlin Half Marathon is celebrating its 33rd year, and as always we have a good number of guests staying with us who will be getting up on the morning of Sunday 7th April ready to take the challenge. The route leads from Karl Marx Allee past the Television tower and along Unter den Linden and through the Tiergarten to Schloss Charlottenburg, before heading south to the Ku’damm and back towards Mitte and the finish. During the 21km the runners will pass many of the famous sights of Berlin, which makes this one of the most spectacular half marathon courses anywhere in the world, and as Berlin is pretty flat, hopefully one of the quickest as well.

Alongside the running – which is of course the main event – there is loads of music, performances and other fun and games, and if you want to head down into town and cheer the runners on, click on the map below for the full route from the Berlin Half Marathon website. Good luck everyone!

Documentary Donnerstag

Our mates at the Berlin Film Society are at it again, as they have just announced the launch of DOCUMENTARY DONNERSTAG, a unique programme of award-winning documentary films curated from the most acclaimed international film festivals, and brought to Berlin for your viewing pleasure on a series of Thursday evenings.

The first half of the programme (28th March – 18th April) includes the recently restored version of Shirley Clarke’s groundbreaking PORTAIT OF JASON (1967), the controversial Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winner THE HOUSE I LIVE IN (Eugene Jarecki, 2012), Chris Marker’s stunning SANS SOLEIL (1983), and the remarkable SXSW-winning film MARWENCOL (Jeff Malmberg, 2010).

The second half of the programme (2nd – 23rd May) will be announced to Berlin Film Society members via the newsletter on 11th April, with a public announcement made on 18th April.

Documentary Donnerstag is being hosted by Urban Spree in Friedrichshain, there is food and an after party, and entry costs €8 (€4 for Film Society members). The first event is on the 28th March – check out the facebook page – and the film to be showing is Jeff Melmberg’s MARWENCOL:

After a vicious attack leaves him brain-damaged and broke, Mark Hogancamp seeks recovery in “Marwencol”, a 1/6th scale World War II-era town he creates in his backyard. When Mark and his photographs are discovered, a prestigious New York gallery sets up an art show. Suddenly Mark’s homemade therapy is deemed “art”, forcing him to choose between the safety of his fantasy life in Marwencol and the real world that he’s avoided since the attack.
