It’s happening again and we couldn’t be more excited! That time of year, when the only collaboration that brings together our love for books and people, discovering new talents and supporting their realization, has arrived. You guessed it, it’s time for Berlin Writing Prize 2019! It may not be our first one, as The Circus has been the happy home of winners of the contest in the past, but to be hompletely honest, it really never gets old! Each year it arrives with a fresh supply of excitement and energy, and what better thing to start the year off with than books?

If you still don’t know what we’re talking about, maybe our last year’s winner Dolores Walshe and her captivating description of the visit to Berlin’s Natural History Museum might refresh your memory? Dolores is an Irish writer recognized for her unique style, especially in playwriting. Her numerous awards include Bank of Ireland/Listowel Writers’ Week Play Award and Irish Stage and Screen Award, and her plays were staged by The Royal Exchange, Manchester, Andrew’s Lane Theatre Dublin and published by Carysfort Press, UCD, and Syracuse University, New York, 2014.

Last year, the topic of the competition was “Home is Elsewhere” and Dolores’s Wooden Box, alongside nine other shortlisted pieces together created the Home is Elsewhere; an Anthology. This year, the topic our applicants will take on is: The Circus“. Yes, it was partly inspired by our accommodation concept, we won’t lie, but there’s much more to the topic than meets the eye! What we would love to inspire with this single concept is a myriad of interpretations brought by our applicants. Life is a circus, they say, and we each must perform different acrobatics to make it our own. This is why the topic popped up practically momentarily and we all agreed on it unanimously.

The project, officially called The Berlin Writing Prize is organized by a collaboration between The Reader Berlin, The Circus and British Council Germany. Partners also include KLAK Verlag, SAND Journal and many more, which ultimately brought together a large writers’ community.

As far as the prize goes, and this is a nice one, the winner will get to stay in one of our luxury The Circus Apartments, located around the corner from Rosenthalerplatz, which again is home to our Hostel and Hotel you know and love.

But the ones who will be having the most fun (and the most work for that matter) will, of course, be the judges. Applications can mount the ceiling and time management is of essence. Lucky for us, we have not one, not two, but six experts who couldn’t be more passionate about literature.

To read about the submission rules and guidelines, more details about the structure and the full list of judges, click here. The application has only just begun and will last 6 months, so plenty of time for you to test your creative writing skills. We can’t wait to see what this year brings!
