This year, as we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we both nostalgically look to the past, celebrating our accomplishments (and our best bits in our very own Circus guide book, “The Circus Sammelsurium – Berlin A-Z”!), but we also look to the future: 2017 has been an amazing year of development and transformation, pushing forward in creative design, infrastructure and technology and working with incredible local specialist craftsmen and manufacturers to realise our vision of the future circus.
Earlier in the year, Circus partner Jim travelled all the way to Reykjavik, Lille, Singapore and Hamburg to find out just what exactly makes the best dorm bed experience, which resulted in our custom design pod-bunks, currently in beta-bed heaven at the Circus Hostel.
After a crazy hot summer last year, we spent the winter exploring new technology to ensure our street facing rooms stayed cool at the Circus hotel, implementing our own unique window and fan systems that combined both form and function.
Our magnificent in-house design expert Sandra Ernst has been working hard imagining our freshly designed rooms, and again we turned to our talented partners, local furniture producers PA Tischlerei, who we worked with previously in our Commonground Cafe, to create these beautiful and practical storage solutions.
With the different sized rooms and the comfort of our guests in mind, we needed to be clever and creative with the furniture design. Through ingenuity; space and comfort didn’t need to be compromised as all the lights and electronics have been integrated into the furniture – with not a single cable in sight!
The newly added folding writing desk reduces in size, creating more space. Lights and USB charging docks are built into the furniture; a shelf has been added to the full-length mirror for your grooming essentials, and a secure safe and drawers are built into the wardrobe, again, creating more space, and finished with coloured oak to match the floors and keep the aesthetic flowing.
With over 10 years of experience in the field of furniture design and production, working specifically with independent companies, master carpenter Frank Pojonie and architectural engineering expert Thomas van Asseldonk founded PA Tischlerei and welcomed a small team of experts to realise adventurous projects like ours, specialising in the planning and execution of high-quality, functional living and presentation furniture, working with the most modern machines.
Sandra caught up with them in their workshop to see our furniture being made and find out from them what makes their work so special:
“We produce on a workshop surface of 450m² with the most modern machines and we process all common materials. High-quality, spray-painted surfaces of all types are produced in our own lacquer room. Our clients are architects, agencies, companies as well as private customers. We offer our customers individual and competent advice from finding and developing your first idea to the completion of your personal setup. Creative solutions in the planning and high craftsmanship in the execution are for us self-evident.
The furniture we produce for the Circus Hotel is always characterized by a high demand for design and quality. All furniture is developed and adapted in cooperation with the Circus Design team, especially for the given situation. This creates new challenges which we are happy to implement for the Circus Hotel!”
Boys, a success as always! Thanks 🙂
