Best part of being in the hospitality business is meeting all the cool people who stay with us and hearing their incredible stories. Every day! Some are funny, some are sad, some are straight up weird, and some leave you craving for more. It was one of those that inspired our upcoming Football in Djibouti Charity project. But there’s a twist! This time it didn’t come from one of our guests. It came from one of our own team members. It’s like looking for love: you’re too busy searching all over to see what’s right in front of you!

Our wonderful Hostel Manager Eliese is the hero of this story. The whole thing started when she put us in touch  with the German embassy in the city of Djibouti and launched our latest project for a better world.

For over five years now, The Circus has been organizing charity projects trying to make a positive impact around the world, one little step at a time. So far, our portfolio has included both local and international projects. We’ve actively supported several integration projects in Berlin and organized charity events around the world. Last year we successfully raised €8000 and funded a water well for Bully in Gambia. And our last project raised €4,000 for Sparrow Home Bangkok, an organization that was founded by our previous employee Julia Stone‘s mother, and works towards providing better lives for children born in Thai prisons.

This project is special too – we are uniting our love for people with our love for Europe’s favorite sport – football!

Located in the southern coast of the Red Sea, Djibouti is a small but important country in the eastern region of Africa. Comparatively better developed than its neighboring countries, it plays a key role for the refugees fleeing the civil war in Yemen. Its geographical location makes it most easily reached by sea and Djibouti has, up to now, welcomed more than 40.000 refugees in its numerous camps. A lot of them are young and active people, and with war raging in their homeland, their life in the camps has created a strange problem – they have nothing to do!

It might not seem like a real problem, but levels of activity and engagement can have a huge impact on people’s lives and their levels of happiness. Boredom and violence are also strongly connected, and keeping youth busy can really be the make-or-break factor in organized living, especially inside refugee camps. So we teamed up, literally, and brought Europe’s beloved footy to the Merkazi camp!

The project aims at bringing the camp’s residents closer to the locals and turning the football pitch into a common ground where they can escape the realities of war and connect in a fun and healthy way!

If you are interested in helping, please transfer whatever money you can spare to the following bank account. We guarantee that 100% of your donation goes directly to the project. Alternatively, drop by our Hotel or Hostel and leave a euro (or whatever you can spare) in our charity boxes at the reception. We are deeply grateful for your contribution. Every little helps!
